You might wonder why we've chosen to make mashed potatoes without butter. There are several reasons. Firstly, using olive oil provides a good substitute for those who are vegan or lactose intolerant. Secondly, olive oil offers the best flavor while also being packed with heart-healthy fats and antioxidants. This makes our recipe not only delicious but also healthy. Lastly, the rich, fruity taste of olive oil complements the creamy potatoes, giving them an indulgent yet wholesome twist.

    Chef’s Tips

    • Rinse Potatoes before Boiling: Always thoroughly rinse potatoes in cold water before cooking. It removes the starch. This ensures fluffy mashed potatoes.
    • Seasoning the Water: Always season the water when boiling potatoes. It infuses the potatoes with flavor from the start, ensuring they’re well-seasoned throughout.
    • Steam Drying: Allowing the cooked potatoes to steam dry in the colander helps remove excess moisture, resulting in fluffy mashed potatoes with the best texture.
    • High-Quality Olive Oil: Use extra virgin olive oil for its rich, fruity flavor. This ensures your mashed potatoes are delicious and nutritious.
    • Mashing Tools: For a creamy texture, use a potato ricer. If you don’t have one, a potato masher works just as well to achieve a smooth consistency.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Add Fresh Herbs: Enhance the flavor by adding fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or chives.
    • For a Bit of Heat: sprinkle in some smoked dried chili flakes.
    • For a Zesty Twist: mix in lemon zest or a spoonful of basil pesto.
    • Substitute Avocado Oil: If you’re looking to try a different healthy fat, avocado oil is a great option. It has a mild flavor and provides similar health benefits to olive oil.

    FAQs

Q : What types of potatoes should be used for perfect mashed potatoes?

A : For the best results, use starchy potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes. These varieties break down easily and absorb flavors well, resulting in creamy mashed potatoes.

Q : What types of potatoes are not suitable for mashed potatoes?

A : Avoid using waxy potatoes such as Red Bliss or fingerlings. They have a firmer texture and don't mash as smoothly, leading to a less creamy consistency.

Q : What are the best tools to use for mashing?

A : A potato masher works well for a slightly textured mash. For an extra smooth and creamy texture, use a potato ricer. Both tools help achieve the desired consistency without overworking the potatoes.

Q : Can you use a hand mixer or a stand electric mixer to make mashed potatoes?

A : Yes, but use it with caution, because the potatoes can get a gummy texture if they are whisked for too long.
