What is Lebanese 7 Spice Blend (Baharat)?
This traditional Middle Eastern spice mix brings together warming spices like allspice, cinnamon, and cloves, balanced by black pepper, cumin, coriander, and nutmeg. While the word "Baharat" simply means "spices" in Arabic, the Lebanese version is known for its bold yet balanced character.
Culturally, this blend is used in countless Lebanese dishes-from kibbeh to Shish Taouk-and is deeply connected to the region's culinary heritage. While the "7" in the name is symbolic, families often adjust the ingredients to suit their preferences or regional styles.

How to Make This Lebanese 7 Spice Blend
Tested in our kitchen and loved by our readers-this recipe is quick and easy to make.
Method 1: Ground Spice Mix

- Measure all ground spices into a bowl or jar.
- Stir or shake to combine. Store in an airtight container.
Method 2: Whole Spice Blend

- Toast whole spices in a dry pan for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Cool and grind, in a spice grinder or pestle & mortar, to a powder.
Chef's Tip: For the smoothest texture, sift the ground spices after grinding to catch and remove any larger pieces.
- Stir in grated nutmeg. Store in an airtight container.
Chef's Tip: For the freshest flavor, toast and grind whole spices just before using. It makes a world of difference in aroma and taste!
Storage Instructions
- Store at room temperature in a cool, dark place: Keep in a sealed jar away from heat and light.
- Use an airtight container: Use jars or tins with a tight-fitting lid to prevent moisture or air from sneaking in, which can dull the spices over time.
- Label with date: Mark the jar with the date you made the blend-spices are best enjoyed fresh, so aim to use it within 3-4 months for peak flavor.
- Freeze for longer storage: If you want to keep it even longer, pop the blend into a tightly sealed bag or container and freeze it for up to 6 months. Just let it come to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation.
