    Are Apples Healthy?

An apple a day truly keeps the doctor away! Apples boast numerous health benefits, including being rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients. They contribute to heart health, may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, and aid in maintaining a healthy digestive system.

    • Fiber Powerhouse: Apples are a rich source of dietary fiber, promoting a healthy digestive system. The high fiber content aids in contributing to overall gut health.
    • Antioxidant Marvels: Filled with antioxidants, apples help combat oxidative stress in the body. These antioxidants, including flavonoids and polyphenols, play a crucial role in neutralizing harmful free radicals, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases.
    • Heart-Healthy Goodness: Incorporating apples into your diet may contribute to heart health. The soluble fiber in apples, specifically pectin, has been linked to lower cholesterol levels. This, in turn, supports cardiovascular health by reducing the risk of heart disease.
    • Type 2 Diabetes Defense: Studies suggest that regular consumption of apples may contribute to a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The natural sugars in apples, combined with their fiber content, help regulate blood sugar levels, providing a steady release of energy without causing sharp spikes.
    • Nutrient-Rich Goodness: Beyond fiber and antioxidants, apples are a powerhouse of essential nutrients. They provide a variety of vitamins, including vitamin C, as well as minerals like potassium. These nutrients contribute to overall well-being, supporting immune function and maintaining electrolyte balance.
    • Cancer-Preventing Potential: Some studies have indicated that the compounds in apples may have protective effects against certain types of cancer. The combination of antioxidants and other bioactive compounds in apples contributes to their potential anti-cancer properties.

What Are the Best Apples To Use

Choosing the right apples is crucial for the perfect chip. While Granny Smith offers a tart kick, sweet varieties like Gala, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp provide a delightful sweetness. Experiment with different varieties of apple types to find your personal preference.

    How To Make Oven-Dried Apples:

    Prep:

Apple slices in a bowl - step 1.
Apple slices mixed with honey and cinnamon in a glass bowl - step 2.
    • Preheat the oven to 100°C (212°F).
    • Line 2 - 3 large baking sheets with parchment paper.
    • Wash and dry apples.
    • Use a sharp knife to cut apples into very thin (1-2mm) slices (or use a mandolin slicer).
    • Place the honey in a large glass bowl and warm it in the microwave for a few seconds.
    • Add the lemon juice, cinnamon, and apple slices, and give it a good toss. Make sure all the apple slices are well coated.
    • Place apple slices onto the prepared baking trays covered with parchment paper in a single layer, don't let apple slices overlap.
Apple slices arranged on a baking tray ready for baking - step 3.

    Bake:

    • Bake for 1 hour, then remove the baking sheet from the oven.
    • Turn the apple slices around and bake for a further 1 hour.
    • Turn the oven off and allow the apple chips to cool completely in the oven, this will ensure optimum crispness from this extra drying time.

Chef's Tip - Depending on your oven and the thickness of your apple slices, you might need to pop them back in the oven for an additional 30 minutes to 1 hour. To test if your apple chips are ready, remove one from the oven put it on a drying rack and allow it to cool completely. If they are crispy when cooled down they are ready!  Enjoy!

Other Methods to Make Dehydrated Apple Chips

    • Food Dehydrator: Optimal for preserving nutrients; arrange slices on trays and dehydrate for 2-3 hours.
    • Air Fryer: Quick and crisp; place apple rings in the basket, cook until crispy.
    • Microwave: Arrange thinly sliced apples on the glass tray, use DEFROST mode for 15 minutes, turning every 5 minutes.

    How to Use Apple Chips

There are lot of great ways to eat apple chips, including (but not limited to) the following:

    • Enjoy them as a healthy snack
    • Add them to the trail mix, granola, or muesli
    • Throw them in your oatmeal or overnight oats
    • Chop dried apple slices and sprinkle over yogurt
    • Add to any favorite salad
    • Use as garnish for cupcakes, cakes & desserts

How to Store Dried Apple Chips

Once the apple chips have cooled completely to room temperature, keep them in a ziplock bag, mason jar or an airtight container. Preserve it out of direct sunlight in a cool and dry place. They will store well and have a shelf life of about a week.

If the chips lose some of their crispness over time, bake them for about five minutes at 300°F/150 C in a preheated oven to re-crisp. They will be just as crispy as the first day!

    Recipe Notes

    • Apple slices gradually dehydrate during the baking/drying process; therefore, ensure that you have sufficient time to bake them, as the process can take a couple of hours.
    • The baking time can vary depending on the moisture level of the fruit and the thickness of the slices.
    • Thin slices are great! The apples will still be delicious if you slice them thicker, but they will not be crisp.
    • Cut thicker pieces if you like chewy apple chips. Also, the baking time will be significantly longer-roughly five hours.
    • The final color of the apple chip can vary depending on the type of apple. Softer and sweeter apples are typically darker in color, whereas crisper apples are typically lighter in color.
    • If your apples are particularly sweet, skip the honey/sugar and enjoy their natural sweetness instead.
    • Slice the apples into shapes with cookie cutters to make shapes out of the apple chips.
    • You can also use different spices, such as gingerbread or pumpkin pie spice.

    FAQ's

Do I Need To Peel Apples Before Making Apple Chips?

There is no need to peel apple skins before making apple chips. Although peeling them is perfectly fine, leaving the skin on the apples lets them get crispy and delicious.

Do I Need To Core Apples?

You can remove the core if you like; however, I prefer to keep it in because I think it makes the apple chips look more appealing.

How Do I Make Even Thin Apple Slices?

Thinner slices will make the chips crispier, so I strongly suggest using a mandolin to make even thin apple slices. Just be careful not to cut yourself and use the protection that comes with the tool.
If you don't have a mandolin, slice the apples as finely as you can using a sharp knife.

How Do I Stop Apples From Going Brown After Cutting?

To keep apples from turning brown, soak the apple slices in lemon water (with a ratio of 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to 1 cup of water) for three to five minutes, then rinse, and drain. An alternative would be to just put a small amount of salt in a bowl of water, add your apple slices, cover, and let soak for about five minutes before draining. Salt will keep the apple from oxidizing because it is a natural preservative. Before using, if preferred, you can rinse the apples with fresh water.
